 Bad Words is a 2013 American black comedy film directed by Jason Bateman and written by Andrew Dodge. Marking Bateman's directorial debut, the film stars Bateman as a middle-aged eighth grade dropout who enters the National Quill Spelling Bee. It also stars Allison Janney, Rachael Harris, Philip Baker Hall, and Kathryn Hahn.

The film premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2013, and began a limited release in the United States on March 14, 2014, expanding wide on March 28.

An adult, who has been a school dropout, finds a loophole in the regulations and participates in the largest spelling bee in the USA, The Golden Quill. His aim is to take revenge for something done to him in the past.

Storyline:  Guy Trilby (Bateman), a 40-year-old middle school dropout discovers his biological father, who left his unwed mother upon learning of her pregnancy, runs the largest spelling bee in the USA, The Golden Quill.

Guy gets his revenge on the father he never met (Dr. William Bowman) by finding a loophole and attempting to win the Golden Quill spelling bee as an adult. Guy's original goal is to ensure his father never forgets his name.

Along the way, he befriends a female reporter and a young contestant whom he exposes to the wilder side of life, while learning a little about himself.

While befriending another (10 year old) contestant Guy Trilby introduces the young boy to things like shoplifting, alcohol and looking at a bare chested hooker.
